Unjust censorship

WHILE censorship does have its benefits, particularly to shelter children from explicit works that could have a negative impression on them, it can however be overused to the point the work itself is jeopardised and the messages distorted as a result.

This is the main reason why censorship in the modern world is an issue. It is not an issue to shelter one’s child from elements in the real world that are deemed inappropriate such as sex, drugs and violence.

Parents do have that right to exercise restrictions on their children, especially on platforms that normalise these elements in the entertainment medium. However, it is nonsensical for government intervention to force this right on a platform like Netflix.

It is even more ridiculous that parents themselves demand such an option when, again, it is available to them from the get-go.

First of all, shows on Netflix have an age rating shown before each show. We are living in an era where information is at one’s fingertips.

If parents are sceptical of the age rating provided by Netflix, then they can research the show or film on the Internet.

Parents who demand government censorship for Netflix are not only lazy but ignorant as well, and their opinions should not be considered when the solution has been right in front of them this whole time.
