Stern action can serve as deterrent deterrent

I AM writing to voice my feeling of regret on a few incidents involving our national flag, the Jalur Gemilang.

Why disrespect the flag by flying it upside down? Also, why use a tattered and faded-looking national flag?

It is unfortunate that such an incident has happened a few times recently.

This was followed by the Perak Basketball Association which has apologised over a picture showing an upside-down state flag on the jersey of one of its players.

According to a local report, this followed an incident the day before whereby an inaccurate Jalur Gemilang was used during the opening ceremony of the National Under-15 Basketball Championship.

If such a thing had happened just once, then it might not raise any suspicion and probably be seen as unintentional.

However, it has happened a few times, so it is not unintentional. Perhaps there is a hidden agenda.

If true, the people responsible do not respect the flag and this is akin to humiliating the nation.

Action must be taken against the parties involved. An apology is not enough.

The authorities must consider a heavier penalty to make sure the person or persons involved learn their lesson and will no longer take this issue lightly.

Also, stern action will hopefully serve as a deterrent against such acts recurring in the future.
