A call for all politicians to fight Covid-19 together

LETTERS: Yesterday, Malaysia recorded the highest ever daily Covid-19 cases – at 1,240 – bringing the cumulative cases to a staggering 27,805. And the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor, which was initially scheduled to end today, has been extended for another two weeks.

The Covid-19 cases keep on spiralling to record highs – as with the country's fluid and rambunctious political scene. Will politicians continue their "antics" at the expense of the people and country?

Will they heed the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'äyatudin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah's advice for all lawmakers, including the Opposition, to stop politicking and fight together to stem the pandemic?

The King has reminded all politicians, particularly lawmakers, to immediately put a stop to all forms of politicking that could disrupt the stability of the country, adding that he has confidence in the current administration in dealing with the pandemic.

But will our politicians really put national interests above partisan politics? Will they seriously adhere to the King's words of advice?

Less than a day after the King urged for all parties to cease politicking, a flurry of political activities was already taking place on the ground. An emergency meeting by Barisan Nasional chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, was called at the Putra World Trade Centre, but it was concluded without any decision reached.

At night on the same day, an Umno Supreme Council meeting was held where it was concluded that the Umno leadership would continue extending its support to the Perikatan Nasional-led government.

This was among the decisions reached during the meeting.

And yesterday seemed to be a day of high drama for party leaders.

What more can we as citizens of this beloved country of ours, expect from our politicians? Do you think they will seriously consider the King's reminder? Despite the endless calls for them to do so and the raging Covid-19 cases, they don't seem to, at least, care.

The slew of activities which took place yesterday is nothing but a good reflection of their political overzealousness and disrespect for the royal decree.

When will they learn to stop being crazy for power and positions? The people's welfare doesn't seem to be their priority, or not in their interest, or maybe the least of things on their mind!

The level of madness of politics in our country should be brought to the lowest level possible for now, with the pandemic still raging. There seems to be a breakdown in trust and loss of credibility for some politicians who are already facing court charges on corruption and abuse of power.

All these, undoubtedly, are putting uncertainty and more stress on the people against politicians.
