Cinema can help Asean grow

LETTER: The Asean region is vast. It has a population of 630 million covering 4.4 million square kilometres and represents nine per cent of the global population.

The member states have had ties with each other since ancient times. This can provide good stories for television shows and films.

Each member state welcomes foreign films and television shows, especially from Hollywood, and embrace values that many young people claim as their own.

The 10 countries in Asean have different levels of economic development.

The film industries in most Asean countries were established long ago, mostly after World War Two, and served only to entertain people.

However, Asean leaders don't realise that cinema is one medium that can bring about changes in many areas and can rival those from elsewhere, such as Europe.
