Have mediation body to promptly tackle sensitive issues

LETTERS: CONTROVERSIAL and inflammatory remarks in the last few weeks have created tension and problems among people of various races and religions in the country.

Not taking action against such inflammatory remarks could result in us going down a slippery slope of hate.

Thus, we need to rein in these troublemakers.

The National Unity Ministry should have cautioned people against hate speech, fearmongering and indulging in behaviour that is against the national interest.

It is only right that the government take tough action to nip the problem in the bud and not let things deteriorate.

I am sure Malaysians value our diversity and disagree with anyone attempting to poison the country.

I also believe that there is no problem in Malaysia that cannot be resolved through the time-tested Malaysian spirit of muhibbah.

Taking into account current developments, it is time to set up a mediation body to address "hot" issues speedily.

The mediation body should comprise capable personalities not afraid to tackle any person or problem. This body should tackle racial, religious or other issues as soon as they crop up.

Upon deliberation and discussion of the issue, the body must come up with a fair decision that needs to be acted upon by the government and the enforcement authorities.

The body should be allowed to act on its own initiative whenever it senses trouble brewing.
