Malaysia's proposal to reform UN Security Council deserves a hearing

LETTERS: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is helpless when it comes to international peace and security.

Why?

The veto power of the five permanent members of the UNSC has been wielded time and again to protect 'cronies', who were and are actively perpetrating ethnic cleansing.

Malaysia has spoken of the strategic and moral necessity of reforming the UNSC.

Here are two ways this can be done.

One, there must be at least three vetoes to block a UNSC resolution.

Secondly, the UN General Assembly must approve — a simple majority will do — the resolution.

Without the reforms, the world will experience more disasters like the genocide in Gaza.

Malaysia's proposal deserves a hearing and systematic deliberations.
