Facility management poised to grow 8-9pc

There are few trends that will shape the future of facility management, including managing new environment with the emergence of open office spaces.

Facility management is a process of managing and maintaining sites and facilities in an organisation to ensure they function effectively and efficiently.

According to Deloitte, well-managed sites and buildings enable organisations to function at their most efficient and effective level, achieving collaborations and offering real added value to the organisation’s core business.

Based on its report, “Strategic Role of Facilities Management”, almost 75 per cent of facilities professionals agreed that facility management had a significant strategic impact. At least 53 per cent of a facility manager’s time is spent on the regular day-to-day operations, and 20 per cent in strategy and planning activities.

Global Facilities Management (GFM) Sdn Bhd executive director Ruslan Nordin said organisations should focus on their core business and outsource non-core services to professionals and dedicated facility managers.

“In other words, with the slow market conditions, companies and organisations should outsource their non-core services to allow them to focus (on their core business) and we will help them in realising their vision,” he said.

Since inception, GFM has been delivering integrated facility management service to various clients in both public and private sectors in Malaysia, Dubai, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. This is for government offices, university campuses, corporate offices, special-purpose buildings, mixed development buildings, as well as telco infrastructure and buildings.

Independent market researcher, Frost & Sullivan had forecast the facility management services industry to grow at a rate of about eight to nine per cent a year.

Ruslan said GFM’s internal aim was to grow in tandem with this forecast, driven by renewals of the company’s existing contracts as well as securing of new contracts.

GFM is managing 25 facilities located in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor, Perak, Melaka and Sarawak.

The company was recently awarded the integrated facility management services at Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia Deep Sea Fishing Port in Tanjong Bako, Sarawak.

“This is the largest deep sea fishing port in Malaysia. We also have been awarded pre-construction facility management consultancy for the Bukit Bintang City Centre project in partnership with UDA Holdings Bhd,” said Ruslan.
