Maximising use of small space

HAVING a small space doesn’t mean you can’t have the garden you desire. There is really a lot you can do to create an environment to bring your work or hobby outdoors.

Just take a look at how gardeners from across the country have designed amazing gardens in small spaces, to create your very own.

You can create an outdoor room by having a small patio garden to help you maximise the space. All you need is a small wooden freestanding pergola constructed over a gravel patio. The pergola creates a sense of enclosure, and in fact, will make the patio seem a lot more bigger then it actually is.

You can enhance the patio with a teak seating arrangement, and some blossoming plants. This arrangement will enhance your overall outdoor garden space.

Gravel is a low-maintenance and beautiful paving option for small gardens. If you don’t want weeds to pop through it, then just spread a layer of landscape fabric underneath.

Small-space gardening can be a challenge when it comes to trees. However, if you already have a large tree in your small garden, the other thing you can do is to capitalise on it by placing a small table, with two to four chairs underneath, for your own private corner.

If you don’t have a tree and the space is too small for a patio garden, you could instead add a two- to three-seater wooden bench and introduce some wildlife to your garden, and make it a haven for birds and butterflies. A bird feeder and birdhouse add to the garden’s wildlife-friendly features.

If you prefer not to sit outdoors, then the other alternative you have is to create only a garden bed. A small garden bed can be enhanced when you install a mowing strip at the border’s edge to keep weeds at bay and act as a low-maintenance garden path.
