Cyberjaya set for new growth wave

CYBERJAYA, a town in Sepang, Selangor, that was launched in 1997 could be on the cusp of a new growth wave.

A partnership between Cyberview Sdn Bhd, which spearheads the development of Cyberjaya, and Australia’s Pivot City is expected to unlock opportunities for the community there. Both parties recently inked the Innovation Ecosystem Partnership agreement to accelerate the growth of businesses and investments at the two hubs.

Cyberview managing director Mohd Najib Ibrahim said the agreement withPivotCity would deliver business connection opportunities; incubator, accelerator and investor relationships; event opportunities; and smart city knowledge exchange.

Cyberjaya is home to more than 40,000 knowledge workers and 50 multinational corporations. Annual revenues of its information technology companies alone stand at over A$4.45 billion (RM13.32 billion).

Pivot City, located on the North Geelong waterfront in Australia, is home to some of Geelong’s most innovative businesses, including LiveTiles, Pivot Summit, g2 Innovation and Runway Geelong.

In spearheading Geelong’s aspiration to become a leader in regional Australian innovation ecosystem, Pivot City Innovation District was created in 2013 as a revived and repurposed†manufacturing district that celebrates start-ups, incubators, entrepreneurs and growing businesses.

Najib said the company is very much aligned with this initiative, running programmes and initiatives that provide assistance to startups towards their commercialisation.

“Only by providing the necessary assistance can bright ideas sustain long enough to make a positive impact on society and will simultaneously enhance the innovation ecosystem in Cyberjaya,” he said.

The signing of the agreement is also timely as Cyberjaya and Pivot City will just be hours apart when AirAsia’s Avalon service†is launched this December.

AirAsia announced in July it would transition its twice daily Melbourne services from Tullamarine Airport to Avalon Airport from December 5. It will also launch the first ever services from Victoria’s second international airport.
