KUALA LUMPUR: 47-year old Kompleks PKNS Shah Alam and a few other buildings in the town centre of Section 14 are set to be demolished to make way for the PKNS Square project.
Kompleks PKNS was built in 1977 to house Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) operations.
PKNS was set up August 1, 1964 under the Selangor State Development Corporation Enactment (1964) as a statutory body and development agency for the state of Selangor.
At one point Kompleks PKNS Shah Alam even housed the Selangor state government's headquarters.
This was while they waited for the completion of the current Selangor State Secretary's office Bangunan Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah.
Talk of demolishing Kompleks PKNS has been around since 2001.
The PKNS Square project is part of a larger urban revitalisation plan for Shah Alam, focusing on transit-oriented development (TOD) and the Smart City Concept.
The development will include the upgrading of shopping centres and SACC Walk, aiming to transform Shah Alam into a net-zero carbon city.
Previously, PKNS chief executive officer Datuk Mahmud Abbas said the project aims to upgrade buildings using a centralized chill water system.
"The project is expected to take a few years and we hope to complete more than 90 per cent by 2028," he said in a news report.
In a recent viral post on X, a user known as Kenji, shared screenshots revealing that several plots of land in Shah Alam's town centre, including Kompleks PKNS Shah Alam and SACC Mall, are set to be demolished.
With the shared screenshots, the user said following the demolition planning, the relevant parties want to have discussions with representatives of Shah Alam residents. The veracity of this could not be immmediately determined.
However, there seems to be some confusion surrounding the project's intentions.Contrary to initial reports of the land being used solely for condominiums, the demolition will make way for the PKNS Square project. Business Times has reached out to PKNS for further clarification.
