(Badminton) Tee Jing Yi in no rush to reach the top just yet

KUALA LUMPUR: Tee Jing Yi is in no rush to reach the top.

In fact, the former national women's singles shuttler is enjoying herself as she slowly moves up the doubles ranking with her partner Soong Fie Cho.

On Wednesday, the Malaysian duo reached the second round of the Korea Open Super Series after notching a 19-21, 21-13, 21-17 upset over India's Ashwini Ponnappa-N.Sikki Reddy in the opening stage.

"Fie Cho and I are in no rush to achieve anything major just yet. For now, our focus is to improve on our ranking.

"If we can do well in a tournament, we consider that a bonus," said Jing Yi, who was only paired with Fie Cho in May.

Since being paired, Jing Yi-Fie Cho have won two titles (Victor International Series and Malaysia International Series) and are currently ranked No 138 in the world.

The Malaysians, however, face a tall order, as they take on China's Huang Yaqiong-Yu Xiaohan next for a place in the quarter-finals.

Also through to the second round were Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017) silver medallists Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi.

The Malaysians saw off England's Marcus Ellis-Chris Langridge 21-14, 22-20 and will play the winner of the match between Hong Kong's Or Chin Chung-Tang Chun Man and second seeds Marcus Gideon Fernaldi-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia next.

It was the end of the road for women's singles Soniia Cheah, who crashed out in the first round after going down 21-17, 21-18 to South Korea's Lee Jang Mi.

The other Malaysians who will feature in the second round on Thursday are mixed doubles' Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing, who will play teammates Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See, who will play second seeds Chris and Gabrielle Adcock.

Independent shuttlers Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Arif Abdul Latif also reached men's and mixed doubles second round with their respective Indonesian partners Hendra Setiawan and Rusydina Antardayu Riodingin.
