KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) coach Kwan Yoke Meng wants the national junior shuttlers to play without pressure at the World Junior Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, as the competition begins on Monday with the mixed team event (Suhandinata Cup).
Kwan, when contacted said: "I think the expectations on some of the players are very high, but I want them to calm themselves down.
"We will open our campaign in the group stages against Armenia, but we will field our strongest team because I want the players to adapt to the conditions here.
"In the world juniors last year, we made it to the final. I believe we can do it again and hopefully go a notch higher to win the title."
The last time Malaysia won the mixed team event was back in 2011 in Taiwan.
Also in Group C1 alongside Malaysia and Armenia are New Zealand.
On Malaysia's chances in the individual event on Oct 16-22, Kwan added: "There are a few players in the world top 6 who can win the title including our very own Goh Jin Wei (girls' singles), Leong Jun Hao (boys' singles) and our mixed doubles.
"However, I don't want them to think too much about it. Yes, past results do give us a rough idea but performance on the day matter more.
"I can say that the players are all in good condition.
"Jun Hao suffered an injury last week, but it is nothing serious. He had some muscle stiffness but we have sorted that out."
Malaysia's last title in the individual event came two years ago in Peru, when Jin Wei saw off teammate Lee Ying Ying in the final.
