Food vendor stall triggered temporary chaos at Axiata Arena

KUALA LUMPUR: The BA of Malaysia (BAM) on Thursday confirmed that it was in fact smoke from a food vendor at the Axiata Arena that triggered smoke detectors, which resulted in a temporary evacuation during the second round of the Malaysia Masters.

The national body, also did not deny earlier claims that an irresponsible individual had smoked in the lower floor of the stadium.

In an official statement, BAM said: “BAM can confirm that smoke released from a food vendor stall at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil triggered smoke detectors at the stadium during the second round of the Malaysia Masters at approximately 3pm, today (Thursday).

"During the incident, BAM’s priority at all times was the safety of everyone involved. As per the stadium’s safety protocol, the Axiata Arena was evacuated immediately to allow a complete and thorough search.

"BAM acknowledge the patience of all those impacted by the temporary evacuation, which allowed the matter to be dealt with in a responsible manner."

There was temporary chaos at the venue as everyone including players, officials and fans were asked to evacuate the stadium following announcements on the loud speakers.

During this time, three ongoing matches were temporarily suspended.

Play, however, resumed within 30 minutes of the short panic incident.
