Tough test awaits Malaysians at Indonesia Masters

KUALA LUMPUR: The Indonesia Masters, the third event on the BWF World Tour calendar, is set to be the first real test for the Malaysian shuttlers.

After winning two gold medals in the season opening Thailand Masters, and one silver at the just-concluded Malaysia Masters, the shuttlers will take to court once again in the Super 500 tournament, beginning Tuesday.

Men’s doubles Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are hoping for another good outing after a semi-final effort in the Malaysia Masters.

"We may have done well last week, but we do not see ourselves as world beaters yet. We need to first be able to maintain that top level game in every tournament.

"Top pairs don't just perform in one or two tournaments, they do it consistently," said Aaron, who together with Wooi Yik will take on former world champions Muhammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia in the opening round on Wednesday.

Aaron added that the Indonesia Masters will be perfect to test their mental strength playing in front of passionate fans.

“Taking on one of Indonesia's top men's doubles pairs in front of their fans is going to push us to the limit.

"Will we be able to handle the pressure at the Istora Senayan? We will just have to wait and see," added Aaron.

The national No 1 are not the only one faced with a tough opening tie.

Independent duo, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong will take on third seeds Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonoda of Japan in the first round, while Malaysia Masters finalists Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi play China's He Jiting-Tan Qiang.

Among the notable names who will compete in the main draw are Goh Jin Wei and Soniia Cheah (both women’s singles); Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean and Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen (both women’s doubles); and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles).
