Get ready for the most anticipated comeback of the year

KUALA LUMPUR: Lee Chong Wei’s return to competitive action next month is the most anticipated comeback in the badminton world.

According to BA of Malaysia (BAM) coaching director, Wong Choong Hann, all eyes will be on the 37-year-old top national men’s singles shuttler, who is set to compete in the Malaysia Open from Apr 2-7, his first tournament in 10 months since he was diagnosed with nose cancer last July.

Commenting on the draw that was released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Tuesday, Choong Hann said: “Chong Wei’s comeback is definitely a very big deal, not just for BAM, but for the whole badminton world.

“He is symbolic to the sport. Everything about him, his passion, determination and discipline is synonymous with badminton.

“We are all excited about his return, and I’m sure he can’t wait to get back on court.”

However, the 12-time winner’s participation is subject to his final medical visit to Taiwan sometime next week.

Should Chong Wei be cleared to play, he will be up against India’s World No 7, K.Srikanth, in the first round at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

It doesn’t get any easier for the ageing superstar, who is also in the same half as 2016 Rio Olympic Games gold medallist Chen Long of China, current world No 1 Kento Momota of Japan, Asian Games champion Jonatan Christie of Indonesia and Danish ace, Viktor Axelsen.

“I do not think retaining the title is Chong Wei’s priority. Fingers crossed, he will be cleared to play in the Malaysia Open.

“Also, this is the Malaysia Open, you cannot escape the fact that the best players in the world will be here.

“But we all know Chong Wei, he will not take part in a tournament just to make up the numbers. He will give his best for sure.

“Right now, it is important to assess his current condition first. From there, we can devise plans and strategies for him,” added Choong Hann.

For the record, Chong Wei bagged his 12th title last year when he defeated Momota 21-17, 23-21 in a dramatic final.

The Malaysian ace then went on to face the Japanese shuttler again in the semi-finals of the Indonesia Open a week later, which was his last competitive match before he was diagnosed with early stage nose cancer.

This year, Chong Wei will be joined by two other local shuttlers in the men’s singles event, national No 1 Lee Zii Jia, and 2018 World Championships bronze medallist, Liew Daren.
