Jin Wei vows to rebound from injury

BUKIT KIARA: Goh Jin Wei has been given the green light to feature in next week’s Malaysia Open despite picking up a hamstring injury three weeks ago.

The 19-year-old said she is not affected by the injury but admitted she is still not at her best.

“Now I am probably at 80 per cent, but there is still time for me over the next couple of days to work on improving my fitness.

“After building up my fitness, then I should be ready for competition,” said Jin Wei, who picked up the hamstring injury when she defeated American Zhang Beiwen in the quarterfinals of the German Open.

The two-time world junior champion revealed that she is more determined than ever to play to her best at the Axiata Arena to get over the disappointment of losing in the All England first round earlier this month.

“I would really have wanted to reach the semi-finals of the All England just as I did in the German Open.

“Right now I am looking ahead and I want to give Malaysian badminton fans something to cheer about by performing well in the Malaysia Open,” said the World No 25.

Jin Wei has proved she could cope with home fans’ expectations when she downed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan and China’s He Bingjiao before losing in the Malaysia Masters semi-finals to Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon in January.

If Jin Wei is able to get past Thai Nitchaon Jindapol in the first round, then she should face Saina in the second round.

Another national women’s singles who will feature in the Malaysia Open is World No 39 Soniia Cheah who will go up against Yamaguchi in the first round.
