Jin Wei racing against time to get fit

KUALA LUMPUR: The BA of Malaysia (BAM) are in a race against time to get Goh Jin Wei fit again for the Sudirman Cup in Nanning, China on May 19-26.

Jin Wei, 19, has not been feeling too well the last couple of weeks, and a nagging hamstring injury saw the two-time world junior champion pull out of last month’s Asia Championships as well as the recently-concluded New Zealand Open.

BAM coaching director Wong Choong Hann, however, is not worried about Jin Wei missing the trip but is more concerned with getting the Penang-born ready in time for the world mixed team event.

Choon Hann said: "Jin Wei is definitely on board, no doubt about that.

"The bigger concern is getting her fit before the competition.

"We (BAM) have been monitoring her progress and there has been slight improvement.

"She wants to improve and we are helping with everything we can. We just need to get her ready in time."

Jin Wei started the season strongly when she made the semi-finals in the Malaysia Masters in January before going on to emulate her feat at the German Open in March.

It was only after the All England that Jin Wei started noticing a dip in form.

"I was happy when I saw Jin Wei back on court yesterday (Tuesday) and today.

"We still got time to help her get back on top and I remain optimistic that she will be at her best for the Sudirman Cup," added Choong Hann.

Having named a rather young and inexperienced squad, BAM have not set any unrealistic targets for the national squad, who are in Group D with 10-time champions China, and India.

The other women's singles players in the team are Soniia Cheah and Lee Ying Ying,
