Peng Soon-Liu Ying struggle to beat gritty India pair

MIXED doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying almost lost the plot due to their over-eagerness before checking into the quarter-final of the Denmark Open in Odense on Thursday.

The fourth seeds were expected to secure an easy win but made life difficult for themselves against India’s Pranav Jerry Chopra-Sikki Reddy.

The Malaysians were forced to save three-game points in the opening game before securing a 26-24, 13-21, 21-11 win in the second round.

Peng Soon said they were impatient and thus made errors during the match.

‘We were just too eager to win and started making too many mistakes,’said Peng Soon yesterday.

‘And as a result, we were forced to play catch-up with our opponents in the first game.

‘Our opponents, however, were playing well, especially in the opening two games while we were making unforced errors.

‘We managed to change tactics and were able to find our rhythm in the third game and won easily in the end.’

Peng Soon-Liu Ying were involved in a late quarter-final match against fifth seeds Seo Seung Jae-Chae Yu Jung of South Korea yesterday.

In the men’s doubles, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik were shown the door on Thursday following a 22-20, 21-16 defeat to Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan.
