Back-up shuttlers to resume training

NATIONAL back-up shuttlers such as Goh Jin Wei, Leong Jun Hao and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin can expect to resume training at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara on July 1.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, BAM aim to get back their players in phases.

BAM's elite players who are under the Road to Tokyo (RTT) programme, have already been training at ABM for a fortnight, after receiving the greenlight from the government last month.

The national body believe that the time is right to bring some players back as sports training and recreational activities have resumed nationwide under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO).

"Right now, we have our RTT players and their sparring partners.

"It's a very small group but we had to adhere to the strict SOP (standard operating procedure).

"Now under the RMCO, we are ready to bring back more players.

"Not all of course, but we would start with our backup players, who have been shortlisted for the Thomas and Uber Cup squads," said BAM coaching director, Wong Choong Hann.

He did not mention any names but it is almost certain that several players, including two-time former world junior champion, Jin Wei and former Asian junior champion, Jun Hao, are high on the list. We have yet to finalise the names but based on world rankings, we can already identify a few.

"We will build our squad slowly. First, the RTT and sparring players and then our shortlisted backups."

Former World No 1 Choong Hann is pleased with the fact that many training centres have started operation since the RMCO was declared.

"It's great, especially for independent players, who can now start training on their own and not feel left out," he said.
