BAM and BWF to decide on Malaysia Open

THE BA of Malaysia (BAM) and the Badminton World Federation (BWF) will decide together on the future of this year's Malaysia Open.

As the world continues to be plagued by the Covid-19 pandemic, it remains to be seen whether the season will restart later this year.

The Malaysia Open, originally scheduled on Mar 31-Apr 5, has been postponed to Nov 24-29, but given the current global situation, it may not materialise.

BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh said: "We are in close contact with the BWF and have decided that we will make a joint decision on the Malaysia Open.

"I spoke to BWF secretary-general Thomas Lund two weeks ago, and he has asked for some time. I know that BWF are not leaving any stones unturned.

"We will try to confirm its (Malaysia Open) status by mid-September or early-October."

The Malaysia Open, which incepted in 1937, is one of the oldest badminton tournaments in the world.

According to Kenny, even a prestigious tournament like the Denmark Open is now hanging by the balance.

The Denmark Open is scheduled on Oct 13-18, right after the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals on Oct 3-11, also in Denmark, but the organisers have yet to release the tournament prospectus.

"It's hard to say anything right now. However, we are monitoring the situation closely."

On the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals, Kenny disclosed that the BAM have already applied for clearance to travel with the National Sports Council (NSC).

"The Thomas and Uber Cups are not BAM's tournaments, so we will wait for BWF's decision.

"If it goes on as planned, we will send our players.

"To be safe, we have already applied for clearance to travel with the NSC," he added.
