Shuttling from 'bad' to 'good'

Once seen as a "bad girl" by some, Toh Ee Wei is making good strides since her return to the national badminton squad in July.

BAM coaching director Wong Choong Hann said the shuttler has been showing great spirit though she still has much to catch up.

Once touted to be the next big thing in women's doubles, Ee Wei, 20, dropped a bomb in January last year when she quit the national team after a fallout with BAM.

However, Ee Wei turned over a new leaf after being given a second chance by BAM. And she is now determined to make an impact.

Two years ago, Ee Wei was seen as a star in the making when she and her then partner, Pearly Tan, reached the finals of the World and Asian Junior Championships.

"Ee Wei is really committed and has shown great spirit in training. It's nice to see her being accepted by the other players too.

"Fitness-wise, she is still catching up but she is making up for it with her determination.

"Training is tough, but she pushes herself hard to keep up.

"There have been no complaints, she's doing good," Choong Hann said recently.

Ee Wei, on a six-month probation till the end of the year, is currently paired with her former Malaysia Games teammate, Anna Cheong.

Choong Hann said: "Ee Wei is definitely looking beyond her probation with the amount of effort she is putting in.

"This is what we want to see in our players. That's the kind of attitude we want from youngsters."

Apart from Ee Wei-Anna, the other pairs in the national women's doubles squad under head coach, Chan Chong Ming are World No 14, Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean, Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen (No 25), M.Thinaah-Pearly Tan (No 39) and Teoh Mei Xing-Yap Ling (No 67).
