'Kisona needs the experience'

Playing the devil's advocate, one may wonder if it is necessary to send S. Kisona all the way to Europe to play in the All England and Orleans Masters this month.

Unlike the rest of the Malaysian shuttlers, the 23-year-old women's singles did not get to play in the recent Swiss Open in Basel.

On paper, the Sea Games champion who left for Birmingham last night, will most likely be knocked out in the first round of both the tournaments, as she is up against higher ranked and experienced opponents.

However, national women's singles head coach Indra Wijaya sees things differently.

The Indonesian told Timesport yesterday: "Yes, Kisona may suffer early losses in both the tournaments. She is up against World No 13, Busanan (Ongbamrungphan) of Thailand in the All England first round, and India's Saina Nehwal (World No 19) in the Orleans Masters first round.

"However, due to Covid-19, we don't have many tournaments to choose from. We can't be picky.

"With most tournaments either postponed or cancelled because of the pandemic, the ones remaining are top tier events, with some being Olympic qualifiers.

"Our women's singles are not highly ranked, and they need experience. So if they qualify for these tournaments, I say send them.

"If they can score an upset or two, they will move up the rankings fast and they will have also earned valuable experience."

Indra also believes that the Malaysian women's singles, especially Kisona, were lucky to have made the cut for the Asian leg of the World Tour in Bangkok in January.

Kisona, currently ranked No 62 in the world, played in both the Super 1000 Thailand Opens then, and will play in her third Super 1000 event this year, when the All England kicks off on Wednesday.

In the absence of several top players from China, South Korea and Taiwan, this is the best chance for the Malaysian players to accumulate the points.

"Honestly, I just put their names in. There aren't many tournaments. So it's all based on luck.

"Kisona got her break in Thailand, and because so many players are skipping the All England, she can now go and compete in Birmingham too.

"If she does well, her world ranking will go up faster than expected. That is my logic.

"And it is the same for Goh Jin Wei, Lee Ying Ying and Eoon Qi Xuan," Indra added.

After a year without international competition, Jin Wei and Ying Ying will join Kisona at the Orleans Masters on March 23-28, while Qi Xuan will compete in the Polish Open on March 25-28.
