Mei Kuan-Meng Yean in do-or-die mission against World No 1

Women's doubles Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean admit there is no point crying over spilt milk.

Yesterday, the World No 11 crumbled under pressure as they went down 21-14, 21-17 to Indonesia's Greysia Polii-Apriyani Rahayu in their opening Group A tie at the Tokyo Olympics.

Failing to replicate their form from the Asian leg of the World Tour (Bangkok) in January, Mei Kuan-Meng Yean find themselves in a do-or-die mission when they take on World No 1 and top seeds Sayaka Hirota-Yuki Fukushima of Japan today.

Only the top two pairs from each of the four groups will qualify for the quarter-finals.

Britain's Chloe Birch-Lauren Smith are the other pair in the pool.

"We were too nervous against the Indonesians. We were trying too hard to adjust our emotions, but it backfired.

"We only have ourselves to blame for our poor performance... we pressured ourselves too much.

"In our heads, we were already thinking about missing out on the quarter-finals during the match.

"That is the reason why we lost in straight games," said Meng Yean.

On paper, the pair's chances of advancing to the next stage are good as over, but anything can happen at the Olympics.

"We have to change our approach and avoid pressuring ourselves into making the same mistakes.

"It's our first Olympics, and we want to make it memorable. We want to perform to our best ability.

"We will give everything we have on court to get a positive result," added Meng Yean.

The Malaysians have never defeated the Japanese pair in all six previous meetings and have only taken a game from them once — which was five years ago.
