Aaron-Wooi Yik falter in Olympic semi-final

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's hope of at least defending one badminton medal from five years ago in Rio de Janeiro did not materialise following the semi-final exit of men's doubles, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik from the Tokyo Olympics today.

Despite a strong start to the match, Aaron-Wooi Yik couldn't contain world No 6 and former world champions Li Jun Hui-Liu Yu Chen of China, who notched a 24-22, 21-13 win at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza.

In the 2016 Olympics, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong settled for the silver after losing to China's Fu Haifeng-Zhang Nan in three games.

In the final today, Jun Hui-Yu Chen will face Taiwan's Lee Yang-Wang Chi Lin for the gold medal.

The Taiwanese world No 3 had earlier upset world No 2 and two-time former world champions Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia 21-11, 21-10 in the semi-final.
