Liek Hou reaches semi-finals

Cheah Liek Hou sealed his Paralympic men's singles SU5 semi-final spot after recording his second successive victory at the Yoyogi National Stadium yesterday.

Taiwan's Fang Jen Yu was initially seen as a tricky opponent, but the Malaysian was in top form as he secured a 21-13, 21-9 win in Group B.

On Wednesday, Liek Hou thrashed Ahmed Eldakrory of Egypt 21-3, 21-2 in his opening match. He plays Japan's Taiyo Imai today.

Favourite Dheva Andrimusthi of Indonesia also secured his second straight win in Group A by overcoming France's Meril Loquette 21-10, 21-10.

"Today's match allowed me to adjust to the conditions here. I initially found it hard to control the rallies but eventually got things going," said Liek Hou yesterday of the venue.

"Against the Egyptian yesterday, the rallies were short, so I had no chance of adapting to the venue.

"I hope I can play better against Imai and win the match to top the group.

Coach Rashid Sidek said Liek Hou is capable of performing better provided he maintains his form and focus in the tournament.

"Liek Hou had a good match today, but his best is yet to come," said Rashid yesterday.

"I do not see him facing any problems against Imai and should be able to top his group."

Meanwhile, veteran Didin Taresoh's campaign in the men's singles SH6 category came to an end when the Sabahan lost both his Group B matches yesterday.

In his opening match, Didin, 46, was defeated 22-20, 21-10 by India's Krishna Nagar.

Didin was forced to retire during the second game of his second match against Brazil's Vitor Goncalves Tavares due to knee injury. The Brazilian led 21-13, 18-13.

As a result, Nagar and Tavares advanced to the semi-finals.

"Didin played well in his first match against Krishna, but the Indian shuttler was fitter as he is young.

"He gave his best against Tavares but could not complete the match due to knee injury. It was rather unfortunate for him," Rashid added.
