Liek Hou closes in on eighth world title

KUALA LUMPUR: Para shuttler Cheah Liek Hou is just one match away from winning his eighth world title after reaching the men's singles SU5 (upper impairment) final in Pattaya today.

Defending champion Liek Hou defeated Turkiye's Ilker Tuzcu 21-9, 21-18 in the quarter-finals before seeing off Taiwan's Fang Jen Yu 21-14, 21-18.

Liek Hou, the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics gold medallist, will face arch rival Dheva Anrimusthi of Indonesia for the crown.

Dheva defeated Japan's Taiyo Imai 22-20, 21-8 in the semi-final.

Liek Hou will also be eyeing the men's doubles SU5 title after he and Fareez Anuar upset defending champions Dheva-Hafizh Briliansyah Prawiranegara 21-11, 19-21, 21-10 in the semi-finals. They will face Indian pair Chirag Baretha-Raj Kumar in the final.

In the men's doubles WH1-WH2 event, Noor Azwan Noorlan-Ikhwan Ramli will get another crack at the title after reaching the final.

Runners-up from the previous edition, Noor Azwan-Ikhwan saw off homesters Jakarin Homhual-Dumnern Junthong 21-19, 21-17 in the semi-final.

The Malaysians will play China's Mai Jian Peng-Qu Zi Mo in the final.

Coach Woon Sze Mei said: "Noor Azwan-Ikhwan did well in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. I hope they will maintain the same fighting spirit in the final."
