BAM keen to stage Asian Team Championships

KUALA LUMPUR: The BA of Malaysia (BAM) hope to get the green light to host the Asian Team Championships.

The Asian team meet, which also serves as a qualifier for the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals, is marked for Feb 15-20.

BAM however need to get approval from the government on a short notice. The decision on the venue is yet to be made although the Malawati Stadium in Shah Alam or the Setia City Convention Centre in Setia Alam are mooted as possible locations.

"We have been offered to host the Asian Team Championships, and we are working hard to get everything sorted on a short notice," said BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh.

"We have to look into the standard operating procedures, especially in light of the recent Covid-19 wave once again.

"We are also working on getting approval from the government as we do not have much time until the proposed dates."

If everything goes well, the Asian team meet will be the first major international badminton competition to be hosted in Malaysia.

The past two editions of the Malaysian Open were cancelled due to the pandemic.

It will also be the second sport to host an international event after squash's Malaysian Open and Asian Team Championships in November.
