Rexy calls for better decision-making

AS he goes back to the drawing board after Malaysia's doubles interest ended in the All England quarter-finals, BAM doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky wants to see his charges make better decisions on court.

Women's doubles Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah were Malaysia's best finishers from the national side, but they fell in the last eight to South Korea's world No 64 Kim Hye Jeong-Jeong Na Eun, who won 15-21, 21-17, 21-9.

Rexy said the match could have been in the bag for the Malaysian duo, if only they had made some tactical changes when they drew level at 14-14 in the second game.

"Pearly-Thinaah played well but they made some mistakes when they were trailing and when they drew level with their opponents.

"For now, we need to regroup and get our focus back."

Rexy was particularly impressed with the performance of men's doubles Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun despite them crashing out in the first round. They gave a good account of themselves before succumbing 21-17, 18-21, 23-21 to world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi of Japan.

National No 2 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who bagged the German Open title last week, were unlucky as Izzuddin has yet to recover from a knee injury he picked up in the final in Mulheim. Sze Fei-Izzuddin lost in the first round, 21-15, 19-21, 21-11 to China's He Ji Ting-Tan Qiang.

"Wei Chong-Kai Wun were brilliant. However, they lack composure especially in crucial moments. They are still a little fragile.

"Only Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik did not play up to their standard, but Wooi Yik had only just recovered from Covid-19, so it's really hard to judge."

Aaron-Wooi Yik, who were All England finalists in 2019, put up a tame show against Ji Ting-Tan Qiang in the second round, losing 21-15, 21-19.
