Rexy denies over-training cause of Tze Yong's injury

KUALA LUMPUR: The BA of Malaysia (BAM) has not withdrawn injury-prone Ng Tze Yong from next month's French Open, All England, and Madrid Spain Masters.

Instead, the national body withdrew the shuttler from next week's Super 300 German Open.

BAM coaching director Rexy Mainaky said no decision has been made as they are still awaiting the full medical report from the National Sports Institute (NSI).

"So far, after our meeting today (Tuesday), his name is still there. We still have to wait for the medical report because, as you all know, his injury is recent and still fresh," Rexy told reporters at Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara today.

"At the recent Badminton Asia Team Championships, he still could not move well against Brunei and did not play in the following tie against Kazakhstan.

"Honestly, I think it's impossible to play at a Super 750 or 1000 because you will be facing top players.

"Still, we have to wait for the medical report to know if he will be able to play," said Rexy.

Tze Yong is in a race against time because the one-year Paris Olympic qualifying period ends in April.

As it stands, the Johor-born's chances of qualifying for the Paris Games are looking bleak, as he needs to be in the Race to Paris top 16 standings to qualify.

Separately, Rexy has denied that Tze Yong's injury is due to rigorous training.

It was reported earlier that Tze Yong would commit to more hours of training to beef himself up.

"Nope, zero. Tze Yong has not committed to that six hours of training a day yet, and this year, he has been out since the Malaysia Open.

"I don't know how much of a recovery Tze Yong has made. From our part, I hope the medical report will say he is okay and his body is ready.

"That way, it will be easier for us to plan and decide," Rexy added.

Last year, Tze Yong made the quarter-finals of the All England and the semi-finals in France.

Should he skip these tournaments, he will lose more valuable ranking points, affecting his chances of qualifying for the Olympics.
