Kisona: Jin Wei's inclusion offers Malaysia's Uber Cup team confidence

KUALA LUMPUR: The BA of Malaysia's (BAM) decision to include two-time world junior champion Goh Jin Wei in the Uber Cup training camp has lifted the spirits of her teammates, especially S. Kisona.

Kisona, 23, said that having Jin Wei in the squad will boost Malaysia's chances in next month's Uber Cup in Bangkok.

Malaysia face a tall order in Bangkok as they are in Group C with Thailand, Denmark and Egypt.

Kisona, who will play first singles, is happy to have Jin Wei, who made a U-turn after announcing her retirement last year, back on her feet and in good shape.

"I am happy to see Jin Wei back. Over the past year, she has not been performing because of her health.

"I think it's good to have her in the squad, we could do well," said Kisona, who defeated Jin Wei last June in the Spanish International final.

Jin Wei, who underwent colectomy surgery in 2019, made a strong comeback this year after a nine-month layoff when she reached the quarter-finals of the Korea Open and the last 16 of the Korea Masters this month.

While she was not considered for the Badminton Asia Championships in Manila on April 26-May 1, the Penangite received a call up for the Uber Cup training camp.

Jin Wei will play second singles if she is selected for the Uber Cup this year.

The other singles players likely to make the squad are Eoon Qi Xuan, Dutch International Series champion Myisha Khairul and 19-year-old Tan Zhing Yi.

On whether Malaysia can clear the group stages, Kisona, who will be making her third Uber Cup appearance, added: "I think we have a chance if we can all play our best. It will not be easy, but it is possible.

"Training sessions are intense as we have been training with the guys, and I think we are in much better shape than the previous edition.

"I am also more confident now."

Last year, the Seremban-born Kisona fell prey to online abuse during the Sudirman Cup in Finland, which threw her off her game at the Uber Cup in Aarhus, Denmark.

Malaysia lost all of their ties, including to Canada (4-1), in Denmark.
