Badminton legend Razif in charge of KL training

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Badminton Association (KLBA) have appointed Datuk Razif Sidek as vice president and chairman of their Coaching and Training Committee.

Datuk Seri Jahaberdeen Yunoos, who retained the president post unopposed after today's Annual General Meeting, said it was crucial to have an experienced figure like Razif spearheading the state association, especially when it comes to grassroots and youth development.

Razif, who helped Malaysia win the Thomas Cup in 1992, was also a former All England doubles winner with his brother Jalani.

"I have always wanted the experts to do the job. Presidents should provide leadership and leave the limelight and responsibility of training to the people with expertise," said Jahaberdeen.

Jahaberdeen expects his new office bearers to increase their efforts to churn out more talents for the national setup.

"I hope the new KLBA lineup that consist of experts from various fields, including academics and former athletes, will chart the path for KLBA to reach greater heights.

"Our core emphasis has always been on grassroots and development programmes. We want to unearth more diamonds in the rough and be able to serve as a feeder to the national team," added Jahaberdeen who also announced that the Punch Gunalan Cup will be introduced in recognition of the late legend, who was KLBA president from 1985-2008.
