James set to join BAM as women's singles coach

KUALA LUMPUR: Former international James Chua is set to join the BA of Malaysia (BAM) as a singles coach this month.

BAM high performance director Dr Tim Jones confirmed this today, saying there are still some matters to be finalised with singles coaching director, Wong Choong Hann, but it is likely that James will be joining the women's singles department.

The women's singles department is currently led by Loh Wei Sheng following the departure of former head coach, Indra Wijaya.

Indra is currently the coach for world No 5 men's singles shuttler, Lee Zii Jia, who left BAM early this year to pursue a professional career.

"Yes, James will be joining us and the decision was made based on several key areas.

"I like to have a blend of coaching experience, and James has that, as he was also attached with the BWF Training Centre in Germany in 2009.

"Prior to this, James was attached with the Sarawak BA as a coach and also team manager," said Jones, who added that BAM are still on the lookout for a doubles coach.

If James, a former Malaysia Open champion (2002), joins the women's singles department, he will oversee the careers of notable players like 2019 Sea Games champion S. Kisona, Eoon Qi Xuan, Myisha Khairul, Siti Nurshuhaini Azman and Lee Zhing Yi.
