'Open' title continues to elude Aaron-Wooi Yik

KUALA LUMPUR: Men's badminton doubles players Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik were forced to settle for runners-up at the India Open (Super 750) in New Delhi today.

Aaron-Wooi Yik took the opening set and even led in the deciding game but were unable to close out the match, eventually succumbing to a 14-21, 21-19, 21-18 defeat in the final to China's Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang.

The match, which was played at the K.D Jadhav Indoor Hall, lasted one hour and three minutes.

Aaron-Wooi Yik became the first Malaysians to win the World Championships last year but have not been able to win any 'Open' titles thus far.

Wei Keng-Wang Chang were the only China pair to see action at the India Open today as their compatriots Huang Dong Ping-Wan Yi Lyu (mixed doubles) and Jia Yi Fan-Chen Qing Chen (women's doubles) were all forced to withdraw from their respective finals due to stomach ailments.

Subsequently, Japanese pairs Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino and Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida claimed the mixed doubles and women's doubles titles without having to lift their racquets.

The women's singles final saw South Korea's An Se Young downing Japan's Akane Yamaguchi 15-21, 21-16, 21-12.

The men's singles final between Viktor Axelsen (Denmark) and Kunlavut Vitidsarn (Thailand) will be played later today.
