Specially tailored programme mooted for Aaron-Wooi Yik

KUALA LUMPUR: It is no secret that the ultimate goal for men's doubles Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik is to peak at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

And for this to materialise, it is crucial for the world No. 3 to be placed under a special programme.

BA of Malaysia (BAM) coaching director Rexy Mainaky agreed that it's pivotal for the pair to maintain consistency in the world rankings from now until the end of the one-year Olympic qualifying period in April.

Rexy said: "It is true, it is important that Aaron-Wooi Yik continue to play consistently and safeguard their world ranking because this will greatly benefit their seeding at the Olympics.

"However, what's more important is that we need to tailor a specific programme that will allow them to peak at the right time, and that time is the Paris Olympics."

"We no longer need to say things like 'we expect them to win this or that' from Aaron-Wooi Yik."

After years of being in the shadow of other top pairs, the former world champions achieved their maiden World Tour title on their seventh attempt when they won at the recent Super 750 Denmark Open in Odense.

Due to a busy schedule and a minor thigh injury to Wooi Yik, the pair decided to withdraw from the French Open last week.

If all goes as planned, Aaron-Wooi Yik will make their return at the Kumamoto Masters in Japan, a Super 500 event scheduled for November 14-19.

"I believe it's a much-needed break for the pair because they've been playing non-stop since the Asian Games in Hangzhou. This break will help them recover physically and mentally.

"What I can say now is that Aaron-Wooi Yik have a very positive mindset and are in a positive position. They have matured and have a clear direction of what they want to achieve," added Rexy.
