Wee Kiong-Azriyn shock Indonesian top seeds in KL Masters

KUALA LUMPUR: Independent men's pair Tan Wee Kiong-Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub stunned Indonesian top seeds Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani to reach their second semi-finals in three tournaments at the KL Masters on Friday.

The world No. 110 delighted the home fans at the Stadium Titiwangsa by outlasting Sabar-Reza 21-17, 13-21, 21-16, and they will be seeking to qualify for their first final as a pair.

Wee Kiong-Azriyn's best performance to date was reaching the semi-finals of the Kaohsiung Masters in Taiwan in September.

They started their partnership in June after parting ways with their respective partners. Wee Kiong ended his partnership with Tan Kian Meng while Azriyn split with Low Juan Shen.

Also advancing to the last four were Austrian Open winners Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong, who defeated Taiwan's Chen Zhi Ray-Lu Chen 21-16, 21-19.

In the men's singles, Leong Jun Hao and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin also stayed on course to make it an all-Malaysian final after clearing their quarter-final hurdles.

Jun Hao defeated last year's world junior champion Koo Kuan Lin of Taiwan 21-16, 21-15, while Aidil dispatched Singapore's Jason Teh 21-18, 5-21, 21-13.

Aidil will face top seed Lee Chia Hao of Taiwan, while Jun Hao will meet South Korea's Choi Ji Hoon.

In the mixed doubles, the hosts are also well-represented with Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See and Choong Hon Jian-Go Pei Kee still remaining in contention.

There were no survivors left in the women's singles and women's doubles following the exits of K. Letshanaa and Pei Kee-Low Yeen Yuan in their respective events.
