Malaysians fall at semis hurdle at Guwahati Masters

KUALA LUMPUR: The much anticipated all-Malaysian men's singles final at the Guwahati Masters will not take place tomorrow.

Instead, it will be an all-Indonesian final after Justin Hoh and independent Cheam June Wei crashed out in the semi-finals today.

Justin, who stunned reigning world junior champion Alwi Farhan of Indonesia in the quarter-finals on Friday, couldn't follow through in the last four, and was forced to retire when he was trailing Alvi Wijaya Chairullah 21-12, 11-2.

The 19-year-old Justin is only playing in his second top flight tournament since making a return from a career-threatening Achilles tendon rupture in April.

The severity of the latest injury sustained by the Kuala Lumpur-born shuttler remains to be seen, but it will be a huge blow if he has to be sidelined again, especially when he is expected to move up the world ranking on Tuesday.

Prior to his injury, Justin had reached a career high world No. 48 ranking.

Meanwhile, in the earlier semi-final match, June Wei lost 21-10, 21-19 to Yohanes Saut Marcellyno.

It was also the end of the road for national mixed doubles duo Choong Hon Jian-Go Pei Kee.

Hon Jian-Pei Kee went down in three games to sixth seeds Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch of Denmark 21-16, 12-21, 21-7.

The Danish duo will face Singapore's Terry Hee-Jessica Tan in the final.
