Hon Jian-Haikal reach Guwahati Masters final

KUALA LUMPUR: National men's doubles Choong Hon Jian-Haikal Nazri are through to the final of the Guwahati Masters in India.

Fresh from winning the Syed Modi International last week, Hon Jian-Haikal, who were only paired up in August, ousted compatriots Boon Xin Yuan-Goh V Shem 21-18, 21-17 in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Hon Jian-Haikal, who are expected to move up the world rankings on Tuesday, will play Taiwan's Lin Bing Wei-Su Ching Heng for the crown on Sunday.

This will be Hon Jian-Haikal's third final appearance this season, after also reaching the Indonesia Masters final in October.

Earlier, Hon Jian and mixed doubles partner, Go Pei Kee, fell short in their bid to reach the final when they lost 21-16, 12-21, 21-7 to Denmark's Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch in the last four.

An all-Malaysian men's singles final also did not materialise after both Justin Hoh and independent Cheam June Wei crashed out in the semi-finals.

June Wei lost 21-10, 21-19 to Indonesia's Yohanes Saut Marcellyno, while Justin, playing in only his second tournament after making a comeback from an Achilles tendon rupture in April, was forced to retire in his match against Indonesian Alvi Wijaya Chairullah.

Justin, who stunned reigning world junior champion Alwi Farhan in the quarter-finals on Friday, was trailing Alvi 21-12, 11-2 when he threw in the towel.
