Raising the bar for Hon Jian-Haikal

KUALA LUMPUR: Men's doubles Choong Hon Jian-Haikal Nazri have proven that their recent success in winning back-to-back titles in India was not a flash in the pan.

Following their triumphs at the Super 300 Syed Modi International in Lucknow last week and the Super 100 Guwahati Masters on Sunday, BA of Malaysia coaching director Rexy Mainaky is ready to test the world No. 69 in higher-tier tournaments next season.

Commenting on Hon Jian-Haikal, who were only paired up in August, Rexy said: "This is the natural progression that all players must go through — from lower-tier tournaments like International Series and Challenges to Super 100, 300, and beyond.

"Hon Jian-Haikal have performed well in India, and we would like to see them continue their success.

"Since they have proven themselves in Super 100 and 300 events, we will get them to play in more Super 300 tournaments next year.

"We might even register them for Super 500 tournaments too, but they must be consistent."

Earlier, Rexy hinted that Hon Jian-Haikal might be considered for the Asian Team Championships (ATC) in Selangor in February. The ATC serves as the regional qualifier for the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Chengdu, China, in April.

Two years ago at the Setia City Convention Centre, the Malaysian men's team clinched their maiden title, while the women's team also qualified for the Uber Cup on merit by reaching the semi-finals.
