BAM sends 19 new junior shuttlers on Outward Bound adventure

KUALA LUMPUR: The BA of Malaysia (BAM) has embraced innovative approaches to nurture the upcoming generation of national badminton players.

This week, BAM welcomed 19 young shuttlers from 11 different states nationwide to join the national junior programme at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara.

These players, aged between 16-18, were identified through the Talent Identification Programme (TID) conducted in December last year.

On Monday, BAM convened with parents for an open discussion, outlining mutual responsibilities and expectations.

"We are honoured to engage with the parents and guardians of our newly selected ABM players. It's a privilege to be entrusted with nurturing the next wave of badminton players," said BAM head of administration Michelle Chai.

"This session facilitated a thorough briefing on ABM's obligations and forthcoming expectations for the players.

"We collectively emphasised the importance of transparent communication among all stakeholders — players, coaches, and parents," she added.

Michelle also revealed that all 19 players were sent out on Tuesday for a 14-day outward-bound course in Lumut.

Outward Bound Malaysia designs courses that challenge participants both mentally and physically, building resilience and determination

"The outward bound course offers a refreshing break from badminton-centric activities, allowing us to assess the players' character while they explore new facets of themselves," Michelle explained.

"Partnering with OBS (Outward Bound School), a renowned institution for outdoor experiential education, is a significant step forward. This is the first, but it won't be the last."

These players will remain under the national junior programme, retaining eligibility for junior tournaments, including the Asian and World Junior Championships.

Players who shine and perform well will subsequently progress to the national senior team.
