Shuttler Roy King ready for dual action after injury layoff

KUALA LUMPUR: Doubles specialist Yap Roy King will continue to compete in two events as long as required by the national team.

The 23-year-old will return to action at the Swiss Open (March 19-24) and Spain Masters (March 26-31) following a three-month injury layoff.

He will pick up right where he left off in December by resuming his partnership with Wan Arif Junaidi in the men's doubles and Valeree Siow in the mixed doubles.

Roy King hopes to make his presence felt after making good progress with both partners before sustaining a knee injury during the Syed Modi India International.

He suffered from a medial and lateral meniscus tear in his left knee. Additionally, he had a strained ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and MCL (medial collateral ligament).

"It's a relief. I'm finally cleared to return to competition," said Roy King.

"I'm quite excited after being sidelined for several months. However, I also feel anxious about re-injuring myself. This is a challenge that I must overcome.

"I am 100 per cent competition fit after a week-long full training regime."

On whether he was burdened by the dual role upon returning from a lengthy layoff, Roy King said he is up for the challenge.

"There is no problem. I can handle two events. I don't really focus on getting the results, but rather give my best in each match and stick to the process," said Roy King.

"The past year playing in two events, I have learned a lot about preserving my condition and ensuring quick recovery in between the matches.

"There must be a reason why the coaches want me to play in both events. They know what's best for me. I have no plans to switch to one specialisation for now."

Roy King has proven his ability in both men's and mixed doubles events.

Last year, with Arif, they won the Nantes International Challenge in June and emerged as national champions in July.

With Valeree, Roy King had bagged the Indonesia Masters Super 100 title.

It is rare for doubles players to compete in two events due to the high intensity of the game.

Presently, South Korea's Seo Seung Jae is the only player known to be equally successful in both events.

Last year, he pulled off a remarkable feat by winning the men's doubles with Kang Min Hyuk and mixed doubles with Chae Yu Jung at the World Championships.
