Cricketers eye golden hat-trick at Sea Games

KUALA LUMPUR: National cricket coach Bilal Asad has no doubt his squad has the ability to win all three men's events they will be competing in at the Phnom Penh Sea Games (May 5 to 17).

Bilal said the team had the right mix of experience and youth to be able to win gold in the T10, T20 and 50 over categories in Cambodia.

Nations are allowed to compete in three out of the four categories available. Malaysia has chosen not to compete in the six-a-side category.

"I think we have prepared well, thanks to the amount of the cricket (competitions) we have played in the build-up to the Sea Games," said Bilal in Bukit Jalil today.

"We have experienced players who have been with the team for seven to eight years or more, and we have also added some young ones to add vigour to the team.

"Cricket, as they say, is a funny game and whoever plays better on the day wins. That (uncertainty) aspect is always going to be there.

"But I feel that we are ready, I believe that we can go there and probably win it. We are trying to keep all negative thoughts away.

"We have a very clear picture of what we have to do, which is to win all three golds."

Bilal, who is from Pakistan, expects Singapore to be Malaysia's toughest rivals in Cambodia.

The women's squad are targeting three silver medals at this year's Sea Games.

Cricket made its Sea Games debut at Kuala Lumpur 2017 but was not included at Manila 2019 and Hanoi 2021 editions.

Malaysia won one gold, one silver and one bronze in the sport during Kuala Lumpur 2017.
