Virandeep destroys Indonesia in T20 match

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Virandeep Singh single handedly destroyed Indonesia in Sea Games men's T20 cricket today.

He piled up 116 runs not out as Malaysia won by 94 runs at the AZ Group Cricket Oval in Phnom Penh.

Indonesia won the toss and elected to bowl.

Malaysia scored 191 runs with loss of six wickets while Indonesia were restricted to 97 runs with fall of four wickets.

Ahmad Zubaidi Zulkifle and Virandeep were the first two to bat, but the former was bowled out in 30 runs in 17 balls.

However, Virandeep was simply devastating, amassing 116 runs from 62 balls with 11 fours and seven sixes.

It was the highest score achieved by Virandeep in a tournament.

The 24-year-old said: "It was the first time I scored more than 100 runs in a tournament since my national debut in 2015.

"I have done 94 and 96 runs in tournaments before, but never a century. It feels really good as I did the score at the right time to give a good start in the Sea Games," said Virandeep, whose older brother Pawandeep is also in the Sea Games squad.

"We did well in batting and fielding against Indonesia. We are well prepared for the Sea Games as we had a good tournament in Nepal recently. I believe we have a good chance to win all three gold in the T10, T20 and 50 overs.

"I believe that the only team that can give us a fight is Singapore," said Virandeep, who helped Malaysia win gold in the 50 overs and silver in T20 in the 2017 KL Sea Games

Team manager Amy Mohksani said: "We will play against Thailand in 50 overs tomorrow and we hope for another good result."
