Asean Para Games: Track cyclists exceed target, grab all seven gold in 1st day

NILAI: The national track cyclists swept all seven gold medals on offer in the first day of the Asean Para Games at the Nilai Velodrome yesterday (Sunday).

The paracycling squad started by winning all five One Kilometre time-trials in the various categories.

Afiq Afify Rizan and his point man Khairul Adha Rasol won two gold medals in the One Kilometre time-trial and sprint events.

And in the women's category, Nur Azlia Syafinaz and her point man Noraidillina Adilla also won two golds in the One Kilometre time-trial and sprint events.

National paracycling coach Johari Nayan was elated with the haul, as it exceeded the six golds targetted for the opening day.

"Our target for Day One was six golds because there were some new athletes in the event and we did not have information or clear data on them.

"This is a wonderful moment for the athletes as they have been training for the last two years for this day," said Johari.

Johari is now confident that his athletes will deliver at least three more golds from the five on offer tomorrow (Monday).

"Overall, the target is to win 10 gold medals from cycling, but it looks like there might be more as our athletes will also be competing in the Road Race (on Wednesday and Thursday). That would be a big bonus," said Johari.
