Beasley blasts Sports Minister Syed Saddiq

NILAI: JOHN Beasley does not want to think about his future as the country’s cycling coach after the Indonesia Asian Games.

He just wants to focus on the current task and help his cyclists achieve the target.

On Sunday, Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Rahman revealed that the Podium Programme will be reviewed to reduce costs and this could lead to the axing of foreign coaches and technical experts.

"I think if the Sports Minister (Syed Saddiq) did make such a statement (just before the Asian Games), you as the public can analyse yourself if it’s the right time or not.

"I can't control the Sports Minister from making statements. If he did make such a statement, I would like to wish him good luck and we will accept his decision.

"However, I will continue with the work which I love most until I receive an official notification because right now, my focus is to coach the cyclists for the games," said Beasley.

However, the coach said he will be worried about the future of his athletes and staff, if the minister carries out his plans.

"We have been working hard to improve cycling in Malaysia and over the years, we have turned our dreams into reality.

"So, I hope all those involved in this plan will take a deep breath and only then make a decision, as it involves the future of athletes as well," Beasley added.
