UiTM, KL qualify for Malaysia Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Kuala Lumpur earned favourable results in their respective Premier League matches today to qualify for the Malaysia Cup.

Negri Sembilan, Terengganu and Perak SEDC make up the qualifiers for the country's most prestigious football tournament.

The five will join 11 other Super League teams in the competition, which starts in July.

For Perak SEDC and UiTM, it will be their maiden Malaysia Cup appearances.

UiTM booked their spot following a 1-1 draw with Perak SEDC in Shah Alam today.

Perak SEDC took the lead through Shahrel Fikri Fauzi's header in the 14th minute before UiTM level when Nigerian Akanni Wasiu scored a goal in the 77th minute.

"It is a historic day for UiTM. We have achieved our target by qualifying for the Malaysia Cup and we must now build from this success to finish top four in the league," said UiTM coach Wan Mustaffa Wan Ismail today.

KL also snatched a Malaysia Cup spot following a come from behind 2-1 win over MISC-MIFA courtesy of goals by Modibo Konte and Guilherme de Paula.

Negri, who were held 1-1 by Perlis in Kangar, lead the Premier League with 27 points, three more than second place Terengganu, followed Perak SEDC (22 points), KL (20) and UiTM (18).
