Ex-Atletico Madrid man Marcote now helming Kedah

ALOR STAR: Spaniard Ramon Marcote is keen to take the Red Eagles to new heights after signing a one-year contract with the Kedah Football Association (KFA) as its head coach today.

The 40-year-old, who was formerly attached to Atletico Madrid’s sports coordination-methodology department, described it as a homecoming as he was Kedah assistant head coach with Kedah in 2015.

“I met with the players yesterday and we had held a meeting to get to know each other better.

“My hope is to continue the philosophy and the winning formula that has put Kedah among the top teams in the country,” he said after the contract-signing ceremony with KFA today.

Also present were KFA president, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, and KFA secretary-general Datuk Aminuddin Omar.

Marcote said the Kedah football team has improved vastly since the last time he was in Alor Star, and he hopes to continue the momentum in the coming season.

Meanwhile, Bashah said Marcote’s appointment was made after discussion among the top management.

He said as head coach, Marcote is given free rein to mould the team and choose the players.

“We are also looking for three import players to further strengthen the team and Marcote has the power to choose the players,” he said.

Bashah said the team has so far retained 21 local players and two import players, with three new additional slots for import players being finalised.
