Cheng Hoe using friendlies to test combinations

KUALA LUMPUR: National coach Tan Cheng Hoe has called up 23 players for the international friendly against Fiji at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras on July 5.

He retained 11 players from the team that thrashed Bhutan 7-0 in Bukit Jalil on April 1.

Among those recalled are Kedah’s Ifwat Akmal Chek Kassim, Syazwan Zainon and Rizal Ghazali along with Perak’s Nasir Basharudin and Amirul Azhan Aznan, and Johor Darul Ta’zim’s (JDT) Aidil Zafuan Abd Radzak, Negri Sembilan’s N. Thanabalan and Kelantan’s Danial Ashraf Abdullah.

The trainees will report to Cheng Hoe at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya on July 1.

“I am using the friendly to test players and combinations. The door, however, is still open for those who impress in the M-League to join my team for other friendly matches,” said Cheng Hoe on Friday.

Malaysia will also play Taiwan (Sept 7), Cambodia (Sept 1), Sri Lanka (Oct 12), Kyrgyzstan (Oct 16) and Maldives (Nov 3) ahead of the AFF Cup (Nov 8-Dec 15).

Cheng Hoe’s side are in Group A with Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos in the AFF Cup.
