FAM in no hurry

KUALA LUMPUR: FA of Malaysia (FAM) are in no hurry to field naturalised players (with no ties to the country) as it could pose problems if procedures are not followed to the dot.

FAM deputy president Datuk Yusoff Mahadi said they are still at the early stages to form a special committee to look into naturalisation.

"We have yet to decide on many matters.

"We will form a special committee which I will chair, and the members will be from the Sports Ministry, Home Ministry, Asian Football Confederation and other relevant agencies.

"It might take time, but we want to be safe and make sure there are no hiccups in its implementation," said Yusoff.

According to Fifa rules, a naturalised player is only eligible to play for another country if he has ancestral ties with it, or has stayed at least five years in the said country after turning 18.

Yusoff said even though the process will take time, he believes the plan will materialise.

"We know the implications if we do not follow Fifa rules, and that's why we will take our time to find and naturalise the best available players to represent Malaysia," Yusoff added.
