Malaysia Cup tension for Melaka, Selangor, Police, Felda

TODAY’S Group D matches of the Malaysia Cup are expected to be nailbiting as all four teams are still in the race for the two quarter-final spots.

Melaka and Selangor have each earned six points with the former at the top on goal difference, followed by Police (five points) and Felda United (four).

Police will travel to Jengka to take on Felda while Selangor will entertain Melaka in Shah Alam today.

With only two rounds to go, all four teams cannot afford to drop points today.

Police, who finished third in the Premier League this season, hope to turn the tables on their Super League rivals and qualify for the last eight for the first time since 2016.

Their coach, E. Elavarasan said today’s outcome will likely see at least one team drop out of the race.

“I believe we have the depth to make the quarter-final cut. Our management have set this goal for us,” said Elavarasan yesterday.

“I have taken up their challenge as I believe in my players. Felda are a very good team when they play at home.

“We ne ed to be cautious throughout the game and take our chances.

“The players are motivated and eager but I have to make some adjustments as some players are injured while my first-choice goalkeeper Shahril Saa’ri has been slapped with a five-match suspension.

“I will choose between Willfred Jabun and Bryan See to fill in for Shahril.”

Felda captain Hadin Azman hopes his team will getapositive result today.

“The Cops are a great team. In the first round, they bounced back and won 4-3 following our failure to defend well. We need to avoid the same mistake tomorrow (today).

“Although we are at the bottom ofthe table, we still have a chance of qualifying for the last eight, provided that we take maximum points from our final two games,” said Hadin.

Meanwhile, Selangor will have to reshuffle their midfield in the absence of Brazilian Sandro Mendonca, who is down with a knee injury, when they play Zainal Abidin Hassan’s side.

In the first round, Selangor edged Melaka 1-0 at the Hang Jebat Stadium.
