Harimau Malaya warned to be wary of Philippines

THE Pinoys have become desperados. And this worries Malaysia coach Ong Kim Swee.

He expects Sea Games hosts the Philippines to fight as if their lives depend on it, against Malaysia in a group match at Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila today.

The Philippines team have found themselves in a do-or-die situation after drawing 1-1 with Cambodia and losing 2-1 to Myanmar.

Kim Swee said his charges must tread carefully against Philippines despite the latter lacking potency.

“Philippines are not an easy team to play against. Myanmar also found it tough against them.

“If I am not mistaken, Myanmar only managed to score the winner in the 79th minute," said Kim Swee.

“We have to be careful because Philippines cannot afford to drop anymore points. I am sure we will be pushed hard in this match.

“We must respect our opponents and we cannot be overconfident. The players need to understand their roles.

“We came to watch Philippines play Myanmar (Wednesday) and we will again watch their video later. Hopefully the boys will be quick to absorb our game plan.”

Kim Swee pointed out that Philippines captain Stephan Schrock, who orchestrates the Azkals from midfield, will be the man to watch out for.

Shrock, 33, and defender Amani Aguinaldo, 24, are the two overaged players in the Philippines team.

Kim Swee's side have a game in hand going into the match having drawn 1-1 with Myanmar so far.

He brushed off Myanmar coach Velizar Popov’s claim that Malaysia are the favourites in today’s match against the Philippines.

Kim Swee believes it’s just a psychological ploy by Popov ahead of the business end of the competition.

“We know Popov likes to talk and also likes publicity. I don't think we have to discuss Popov because his team are already in a comfortable position with four points.’

“What is important is that we maintain our game plan and focus on qualifying for the semi-finals.”

Malaysia will face Timor Leste on Monday and Cambodia on Wednesday.
